Located in Chicxulub, a coastal area north of Merida in the Yucatan Peninsula, this project replaces a 1950s vacation home damaged beyond repair by corrosion and hurricanes. The original house, with its modernistic porticos and colonnades, had seven bedrooms and served as a vacation retreat for a family of 10. As the family grew to over 45 members spanning multiple generations, the need for a larger space arose.

The new design honors the L-shaped layout of the original house, completing it to form a hacienda-like patio. The expanded home now includes 16 bedrooms, a multifunction room, dining, living, kitchen, and terrace spaces, all reflecting the character of the original structure. The architecture employs a simple language with careful attention to volumes, depths, and

surfaces, using light and shadow to frame views. The retained portico and colonnade establish a rhythm and provide circulation and private terraces. The horizontal slab connects the house to the ocean’s horizon, enhancing its scale.

Local materials like stone and Chukum plaster link the design to the region’s traditions. The house, completed at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, became a refuge for the family during lockdown, offering calm in challenging times.
